TONY TYRRELL

Tony is a classically trained clarinettist turned sax player and songwriter who played and wrote for the critically acclaimed acoustic rock outfit, The Afternoons, in the 1990s. The band started out supporting diverse acts including Donovan before taking up regular gigs countrywide and further afield, including at Midem (Cannes) where they shared the Irish stage with Stiff Little Fingers. The band recorded an album - Homage - with two independent labels and were shortlisted for both the Smithwicks / Hotpress and IRMA best new band awards. The album was described by Eamon Carr (ex-Horslips drummer turned critic) as possibly the most sophisticated debut by any Irish band. Since then, Tony has been involved in writing for a number of music projects, living for a while in America and generally getting on with life. The Covid lockdown prompted him to reassess things and led to him recording his first solo album at Attica Studios in Donegal. The album was engineered and produced by Mercury Prize nominated producer Tommy McLaughlin who has worked with Villagers, SOAK, and Pillow Queen and was independently released in August '22. Indie Music.com says about the songwriting on Conviction that Tony "is already drawing comparisons to The National, and even Leonard Cohen, beautifully marrying their respective strengths into a carefully crafted group of songs" and BUZZMUSIC Los Angeles says: This debut album is a stunning showcase of Tony Tyrrell's talent as a solo artist, and it is clear that he has found his voice with this moving and powerful collection of songs.
